Process

How to rent an apartment in Amman, step by step

  1. Step 1

Set a budget and shortlist areas

Rents are quoted per year, so divide by 12. West Amman two-bedrooms ask a median JD 730–1,085 a month; city-wide one-bedrooms run JD 174–328 (Numbeo).
  2. Step 2

    View and compare

Visit more than one apartment, at different times of day. Check water pressure, hot water, heating, parking, noise and the commute, and ask exactly what the rent includes.
  3. Step 3

    Check ownership and the agent

Ask who owns the apartment and see the agent's licence. Real estate brokers in Jordan are required to hold one.
  4. Step 4

    Agree the terms in writing

Agree the rent, lease length, payment schedule, deposit and who pays the agent's fee, and put each in the contract.
  5. Step 5

    Sign and pay

Read the whole contract before signing. A deposit of about one month's rent is the most commonly reported figure. Keep receipts for every payment.
  6. Step 6

    Move in

Record electricity and water meter readings, photograph the apartment and sign an inventory if it is furnished. Put utilities and internet in your name.
