How to rent an apartment in Amman, step by step

  1. Step 1

    Set budget and shortlist areas

Decide your monthly budget and which circle or neighbourhood suits you. Rents are usually quoted per year, so divide by 12 to compare with a monthly budget.
  2. Step 2

    View and compare

Visit more than one apartment, ideally at different times of day. Check water pressure, heating, parking, noise and the commute, and ask exactly what the rent includes.
  3. Step 3

    Check ownership, agree terms

Ask who owns the apartment and whether the agent is licensed. Agree the rent, lease length, deposit and payment schedule in writing before you commit.
  4. Step 4

    Sign and pay the deposit

Read the whole contract before signing. A deposit of about one month's rent is common, but the amount and refund conditions belong in the contract. Keep receipts.
  5. Step 5

    Move in: meters, keys, inventory

Record electricity and water meter readings, count the keys and photograph the condition with an inventory list. Put utilities and internet in your name.
